Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand

Kanchanaburi field, approximately 150 to 170 km NW of Bangkok.

Sapphires and zircons are extracted from placers of the Kanchanaburi region in the Makhlong River basin.

Sapphires have blue colours of various intensities. They commonly have a greenish or brownish tint and more rarely are yellow, orange or colourless. Some high-quality, dense blue, transparent sapphires do not require enhancement. Solid inclusions of feldspars, needles of boehmite, dust-like accumulations of rutile and apatite. The refractive index is 1.761 - 1.769, density is 4.0 g/cm³.
