Two large sapphire-bearing regions are known in Cambodia; one in the west at
Pailin, near the boundary with
Thailand (Battambang Province), and one in the northeast near
Bo Keo (
Ratnakiri Province), where gem-quality
zircon is widely distributed. Sapphires and zircons are extracted from residual eluvial and alluvial placer deposits, related to Neogene-Quaternary basalt.
