Jammu and Kashmir, India

One of the most remarkable gem deposits in India, which is famous for magnificent sapphires of intense blue colour with a characteristic "velvet" play, is in the Kashmir part of the Himalaya Mountains.

The main sites from which sapphires are extracted, were discovered in 1881 on the southern slope of the Zaskar Range, near the settlement of Sumjam.
