The general area is located 58 km NW of Mogok township, encompassing an area of ~36 square kilometers, bordering from 96°12'30"E. to 96°15'45"E. and from 22°55'00"N. to 23°00'00"E. and elevation ranging from 930 to 1,460 m ASL.
The occurence of the
sapphires has been known since 1940s. The principle rocks are leucogranite, biotite microgranite, augite granite, diorite, syenite, ruby-bearing marble, pure marble, diopside marble, calc-silicate rocks and gneiss.
Most of the blue sapphires are large in size, but low in quality and appear more "drier" than those sapphires found at
Yadanar-kaday-kadar,
Kyauk-Pyat-That and elsewhere on Mogok. The best sapphires from On-dan (with few exceptions) can be marketed as commercial-grade cabochons of low value. Very few sapphires are of good faceting grade.
Spinel,
almandine,
garnet,
schorl and
quartz are found in the general area.
