Lasering

Lasering, or laser drilling, is the use of a high-powered laser to burn a hole into a gemstone (usually a diamond) to gain access to inclusions within the crystal.
The laser bores a hole of around 0.1mm to create an access channel where a chemical agent, such as sulphuric acid, can then gain access to the inclusion and dissolve it.

The hole is then filled with a glass of similar refractive index to the diamond, although this glass filling can be quite easily detected under a microscope. It may include straight or slightly wavy opaque lines, it may contain bubbles or flow lines, and there may be dark circles where the hole meets the surface of the crystal.
