History:Abu Said, the Moorish Prince of Granada (mid 14th century).
Taken by Don Pedro the Cruel after Said was killed (possibly by him).
Given in 1367 to its namesake, Edward of Woodstock (the "Black Prince"), in exchange for assistance given by Edward to Don Pedro in putting down a revolt lead by Henry of Trastamara, Don Pedro's illegitimate brother.

After the crown jewels were disposed during the time of Oliver Cromwell, a british jeweller bought the ruby, but sold it back to the Crown in 1660 after the monarchy was restored.
