Peridot gem mining.

The primary peridot deposit of Zalat-taung is located north-east of the Bernardmyo village, half an hour's walk from the base mining camp of Pyaung-gaung. The Zalat-taung deposit was given be the MGE as a concession to a private company managed and operated by Lisus. The principal mining site is situated near the summit of Zalat-taung. At the main tunnel peridot, star peridot, enstatite and hornblende are found. Gem mining also takes place on the hillsides, at the base of the hill, and the adjacent valley floor. In September 2001, all mining at Zalat-taung was suspended but reopened in 2002. Gem mining takes place seasonally, according to the demand for peridot in the market.
