Mong Hsu Township (Möng Hsu; Monghsu; Mong Hsu; Maing Hsu), Loilen District, Shan State, Myanmar

Mong Hsu became an important source of commercial quality rubies since 1991. It is located 150 miles SE of Mogok. Rubies originate from marbles. Rubies are mostly recovered from secondary deposits. Untreated rough usually has a dark core surrounded by a red rim. Heat-treatment makes the colour more uniform, often ranging from light pinkish to medium and dark red, purplish red and pinkish purple. Heat treatment may cause some clarity characteristics like translucent zones of dense white clouds, fingerprint-like inclusions etc. - GIA 2018
