Tantamayo rhodonite occurrence, Huamalíes Province, Huánuco, Peru

The rhodonite which has been used for making cabochons comes entirely from Tantamayo. The material is pink to dark pink, often with black spots.

Unusual, translucent, pale pink pyroxmangite is found with rhodonite. It forms pink, irregular "clouds" dispersed in translucent, colourless quartz. Massive pyroxmangite was cut into cabochons, some material contains abundant yellow spessartine grains to several mm. Density 2.93 - 3.63, hardness 6-7.
