North American Emerald Mine, Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina, USA

Transparent emerald-green crystals of the precious spodumene - hiddenite - were first discovered at this deposit.

In 1882, 74 emerald crystals of good quality were extracted from one vug, the largest of which was 21.2 cm in length and 225 g in weight (Sinkankas, ibid).
